Winkworth snaps up 35-year-old independent estate agency

A well-known independent estate agency in the Midlands has been sold by its directors to national chain Winkworth.

Peter Clarke, which was founded in 1991 and has five residential branches plus a commercial property office and surveying practice. It was set-up by 92-year-old Peter Clarke and his two sons, Peter (60) and Jonathan (56).

All are still involved in the business and listed as directors although it is Andrew and a non-family director, Michael Hawkins, who until now have had overall control of the company. It has been operated as an Limited Liability Partnership since 2011. Hawkins bought out the other brother in 2024 to take a stake in the firm.

Peter Clarke employs 40 staff across its five sites including its HQ in Stratford-upon-Avon plus branches in Leamington Spa, Wellesbourne, Shipston-on-Stour and Chipping Camden.

The company has separate property management, commercial property and land/new homes operations in addition to its residential sales and lettings teams.

There are two other non-family directors, Stephen Werner and Barney Smith.

No purchase price has been revealed by either party but the Peter Clarke LLP business appears to be in good health with nearlhy £700,000 cash at the bank and only £90,000 in debts, most of which is hire purchase agreements for equipment.

Winkworth recently reported revenues up 9% but profits down 20% for 2025.
