Philadelphia Airport's Unexpected Queue: Cheesesteaks Eclipse Security Wait Times
In an unusual scene at Philadelphia International Airport, passengers encountered their lengthiest wait not at TSA checkpoints, but at a record-breaking display of the city's iconic sandwich
Monday brought an unconventional spectacle to Philadelphia International Airport, where travelers navigating the terminal discovered their most substantial delay wasn't security screening—it was a culinary achievement stretching across the concourse.
Event organizers successfully secured a Guinness World Record for the longest continuous line of cheesesteak sandwiches, assembling 1,291 of Philadelphia's signature sandwiches within a departure hall to commemorate National Cheesesteak Day. The achievement more than doubled the previous record of 500 sandwiches.
Clarence LeJeune, representing MarketPlace PHL—the airport's concessions operator—described the ambitious undertaking: "We pursued the world record for the longest cheesesteak assembly in history. Today, Philadelphia achieved that milestone."
The cheesesteak traces its origins to early 20th-century Philadelphia and has evolved into the city's most recognizable culinary export. LeJeune characterized it as intrinsically linked to Philadelphia's identity, ranking alongside the city's passionate sports culture.
Teams of volunteers wearing black aprons methodically constructed sandwiches along tables positioned in the connector between Terminals B and C, systematically filling rolls from industrial-sized containers as they progressed past retail locations.
Following official certification of the record, volunteers distributed the sandwiches to passing travelers, airport personnel, and Transportation Security Administration officers.
LeJeune noted the sandwich's flexible preparation standards contribute to its appeal—though he emphasized one unwritten rule: "Swiss cheese is never an acceptable option."
Michael Empric, serving as the Guinness World Records adjudicator for the event, explained that record attempt protocols mandate all food items must be consumed or donated rather than discarded.
Empric added, "These sandwiches are being provided to TSA personnel who could certainly benefit from a meal."
